William Joseph Austin, Jr.William Joseph Austin, Jr. (Joe) has over 38 years of experience helping people with complicated labor and employment cases. Joe’s clients appreciate his responsiveness as well as his sympathetic support and analytic counsel in the full array of employment law issues, including compliance with state and federal statutory requirements, wrongful termination, harassment, discrimination, and retaliation.

Included in The Best Lawyers in America and Business North Carolina Legal Elite, Joe has represented individuals and businesses in state and federal courts and before all major administrative agencies that regulate labor and employment. Joe also specializes in education law and workers’ compensation. His experience gives him particular insight into employment law issues that arise in school settings and at the intersection of workers’ compensation, the ADA, FMLA, and REDA. He is a frequent speaker and course planner on these subjects.

Joe also hosts a public service radio program called “Legal Matters,” which is broadcast by Triangle Radio Reading Service. The program addresses legal issues that confront disabled individuals in the workplace, schools, and public accommodations.

Joe received his A.B. Degree in History and English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1973; his J.D. Degree from UNC School of Law in 1978; and his M.A. Degree in Public Policy from Duke University in 1978. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the UNC Law Foundation and otherwise lends enthusiastic support and encouragement to young people interested in a career in law.

Joe and his wife Gail reside in Raleigh. They have two grown daughters, and are doting grandparents to Abby and Jay Slusher.
